Latch On Techniques and Video Samples
There is not necessarily a right or wrong way to latch on, but there are some good principles to apply if you are sore. If your baby is gaining weight and you are comfortable, I always say things are working well! If, however you are experiencing pain or nipple breakdown on the skin, or your baby is not gaining weight you need to get help quickly!
This video represents one of the latches I like to show mothers during a consult for a more comfortable latch. Some call it the asymmetrical latch or the flipple. Basically you are laying the breast and nipple onto the baby's tongue like a steamroller. This can make for a far more comfortable latch. Remember, if you are sore, the first 20 seconds or so may feel a little sore, but it should quickly feel better.
